Background of the study :
Poverty reduction strategies have long been a focal point of developmental policies in Nigeria, with the Nigerian Poverty Eradication Programme (NPEP) designed to address the multifaceted challenges of poverty. The NPEP seeks to empower marginalized communities by providing access to education, healthcare, and microfinance, as well as promoting sustainable livelihoods (Adamu, 2023). In recent years, targeted interventions and social safety nets have shown promise in reducing poverty levels, yet significant challenges persist. These include inadequate funding, corruption, and inefficient program implementation, which often diminish the intended impacts of poverty reduction initiatives (Bello, 2024). The NPEP is intended to offer a holistic approach by addressing both the economic and social dimensions of poverty. Empirical evidence suggests that while such programs can yield positive outcomes, their success is contingent upon effective management, transparency, and community participation (Femi, 2025). This study examines the effectiveness of the NPEP in reducing poverty across various regions in Nigeria, with a particular focus on how the program adapts to local challenges and leverages available resources to achieve sustainable poverty alleviation (Adamu, 2023; Bello, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the comprehensive design of the Nigerian Poverty Eradication Programme, persistent poverty levels indicate significant shortcomings in its implementation. Inadequate funding, corruption, and lack of effective monitoring have led to gaps between program objectives and outcomes (Femi, 2025). Moreover, the disparity in poverty reduction across regions highlights the need for context-specific strategies. The challenges in program execution have not only limited the reach of poverty alleviation initiatives but also undermined public confidence in government interventions. This study aims to critically assess the implementation challenges of the NPEP and to identify factors that hinder its effectiveness in reducing poverty nationwide (Adamu, 2023).
